Teachers play a central role in a child's education, but research and experience both point to the same conclusion: a parent's involvement at home is one of the strongest influences on how well a child does in school. This does not mean parents need to become teachers themselves — it means showing, consistently, that education matters.
Attendance and Punctuality Start at Home
One of the simplest but most powerful things a parent controls is making sure a child attends school regularly and arrives on time. Consistent attendance, more than almost any single factor, determines how much of the curriculum a child actually experiences.
Attitude Is Contagious
Children pick up on how their parents talk about school. A parent who speaks about learning with curiosity and respect tends to raise a child who approaches school the same way. A parent who dismisses the value of a subject, even jokingly, often sees that attitude reflected back in the child's effort.
Involvement Doesn't Require Expertise
A parent does not need to understand every subject to support a child's learning. Simply asking a child to explain what they learned, checking that homework is completed, and attending parents' meetings when possible all send a clear message: this matters to our family.
Partnering With Teachers
Parents who maintain open communication with class teachers are better placed to catch small difficulties before they grow into bigger ones. A short conversation at the right time — about a learner struggling with a particular topic, or going through a difficult period at home — can make a significant difference to how a teacher supports that child.
Balance, Not Pressure
Involvement should not tip into excessive pressure. Children who feel that their worth depends entirely on academic results often become anxious rather than motivated. The goal is steady encouragement and support, not constant scrutiny.
At Etihad Islamic Primary School, we know that a learner's success is rarely the result of the school or the parents working alone, but of both working together with the same goals in mind.
